3 and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there ap 4 peared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then

the sun shineth in his strength; and when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead, and he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not, I am the first and the last. Re. i. 13.-17. And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud; and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire. Re. x. 1. I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True; his eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written that no man knew but he himself; and he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood, and his name is called, The Word of God. Re. xix. 11-13. I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and there was found no place for them. xx. 11.

Re.

Raiment was white as the light.] O Lord my God, thou art very great, thou art clothed with honour and majesty, who coverest thy self with light as with a garment, who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain. Ps. civ. 1, 2. His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. Mar. ix. 3.

3 Behold, there appeared, &c.] And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. Mar. ix. 4. And behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias, who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease, which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. Lu. ix. 30, 31.

Moses.] See chap. xi. 13, 14. I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren (said the Lord to Moses) like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. De. xviii. 18. Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab over against Bethpeor, but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day. And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. De. xxxiv. 5, 6. 10. The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. John i. 17. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father (said Jesus), there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. John v. 45. If the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance, which glory was to be done away; how shall

not the ministration of the Spirit be rather glorious? For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, how much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory; for even that which was made glorious, had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth: for if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious. 2 Co. iii. 7—11. Where fore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the apostle and high priest of our profession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house: for this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house, for every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; but Christ as a Son, over his own house, whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. He. iii. 1-6

Elias.] See verses 10-13. And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. 1 Ki. xvii. 1. And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I as thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt-sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench; and when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces, and they said, The Lord he is the God, the Lord he is the God. And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Bal let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there. 1. xviii. 36-40. And it came to pass as they (Elijah and Elisha) still went on and talked, that behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father! my father! the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more, and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, 5 behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of

He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord of Elijah? And when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither, and Elisha went over. 2 Ki. ii. 11-14. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Mal. iv. 5. And he (John the Baptist) shall go before "him" (" the Lord") in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Lu. i. 17. Master, it is good for us to be here (said Peter to Jesus at the transfiguration); let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias, not knowing what he said. Lu. ix. 33. The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. Lu. xvi. 16.

4 Answered Peter.] Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias, for he wist not what to say, for they were sore afraid. Mar. ix. 5, 6. Lu. ix. preced. com.

It is good for us to be here.] And he (Moses) said, I beseech thee shew me thy glory. And "he" ("the Lord") said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee, and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious; and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. Ex. xxxiii. 18, 19. There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Ps. iv. 6. Thou wilt shew me the path of life, in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Ps. xvi. 11. O God, thou art my God, early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary. Because thy loving-kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name; my soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips. Ps. lxiii. 1-5. Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off. Is. xxxiii. 17. How great is "his" ("the Lord's") goodness, and how great is his beauty? Zec. ix. 17. Philip saith unto "him" ("Jesus"), Lord, shew us the Father,

and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father, and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? John xiv. 8, 9. Father, I will that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me, for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. John xvii. 24. I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ, which is far better. Phi. i. 23. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 1 John iii. 2. The city (New Jerusalem) had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it, for the glory of God did lighten it; and the Lamb is the light thereof. Re. xxi. 23. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him, and they shall see his face, and his name shall be in their foreheads; and there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever. Re. xxii. 3—5.

5 Behold, a bright cloud.] Then (when the tabernacle was reared) a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses was

not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Ex. xl. 34, 35. It came to pass when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord. Then spake Solomon, The Lord said that he would dwell in the thick darkness. 1 Ki. viii. 10—12. And he (the Lord) rode upon a cherub, and did fly; yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind: he made darkness his secret place, his pavilion round about him were dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies; at the brightness that was before him, his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire. Ps. xviii. 10-12. While he (Peter) thus spake (of making tabernacles), there came a cloud and overshadowed them, and they feared as they entered into the cloud. Lu. ix. 34. And when "he" ("Jesus") had spoken these things (promising to his disciples the coming of the Holy Ghost), while they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of

the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well 6 pleased hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell

:

their sight. Ac. i. 9. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him; and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. Re. i. 7.

A voice out of the cloud.] Mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire, and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly, and when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. Ex. xix. 18, 19. And ye came near (said Moses to the Israelites), and stood under the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds and thick darkness; and the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire; ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude, only ye heard a voice. De. iv. 11, 12. These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me. De. v. 22. The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind. Job xxxviii. 1. Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder; I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Ps. lxxxi. 7. The Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me; ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. John v. 37. Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. The people therefore that stood by and heard it, said, That it thundered, others said, An angel spake to him. Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. John xii. 28-30. As he (Saul) journeyed, he came near Damascus; and suddenly, there shined round about him a light from heaven. And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest; it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished, said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. Ac. ix. 3-6.

This is my beloved Son.] See chap. iii. 17. And there came a voice from heaven (at the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan), saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mar. i. 11. A voice came out of the cloud saying, This is my beloved Son,

hear him. Mar. ix. 7. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. John iii. 16. 35. The Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth, and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them, even so the Son quickeneth whom he will; for the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son, that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father; he that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. John v. 20-23. We have not followed cunningly-devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eye-witnesses of his majesty. 2 Pe i. 16.

In whom I am well pleased.] See chap. xii. 18. Behold, my servant whom I uphold, mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth. I have put my spirit upon him; he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles; the Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable. Is. xlii. 1. 21. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. John xv. 10, 11.

Hear ye him.] The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee (said Moses) a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me unto him ye shall hearken. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words, which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. De xviii. 15. 19. Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren like unto me: him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul which will not hear that prophet shall be destroyed from among the people. Ac. iii. 22, 23. This is that Moses which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren like unto me: him shall ye hear. Ac. vii. 37. God, who at sundry times, and in divers manners, spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by kis Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. He. i. 1, 2. Therefore we ought to give the

on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And when they had 8 lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. And as 9

more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip; for if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression, and disobedience received a just recompence of reward, how shall we escape, if we neglect [ so great salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us, by them that heard him? He. ii. 1-3. And being made perfect, he (Jesus) became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. He. v. 9. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh; for if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also the heaven. He. xii. 25, 26.

6 When the disciples heard it, &c.] There came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat, which when all the people saw, they shouted and fell on their faces. Le. ix. 24. It came to pass when the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar, and Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground. But the angel of the Lord did no more appear to Manoah (the father of Samson), and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the Lord; and Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die because we have seen God. Ju. xiii. 20-22. And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the Lord stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces. 1 Ch. xxi. 16. Then I (Ezekiel at the command of God) went forth into the plain, and behold the glory of the Lord stood there, as the glory which I saw by the river of Chebar; and I fell on my face. Ez. iii. 23. And it (the glory of the God of Israel) was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city. And the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar, and I fell upon my face. Ez. xliii. 3.. I heard a man's voice (said Daniel), between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision. So he came near where I stood; and when he came I was afraid, and fell upon my face. Da. viii. 16, 17. And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision;

but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision; and there remained no strength in me; for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. Yet heard I the voice of his words: then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground. And behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips; then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my Lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. For how can the servant of this my Lord talk with this my Lord? For as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me. Da. x. 7-9. 16, 17. I fell on the ground (said Paul), and heard a voice, saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? Ac. xxii. 7; xxvi. 14. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him (Jesus) in the holy mount. 2 Pe. i. 18.

7 Touched them.] I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground, but he touched "me" (" Daniel"), and set me upright. Da. viii. 18. Yea, while I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision, at the beginning, being caused to fly, swiftly touched me about the time of the evening oblation. Da. ix. 21. And behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees, and upon the palms of my hands. Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me. Da. x. 10. 18. And when I saw him (said John, of the faithful witness), I fell at his feet as dead; and he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not, I am the first and the last. Re. i. 17.

Arise, and be not afraid.] And as they (the women at the sepulchre) were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they (the two angels) said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? Lu. xxiv. 5. And "he" (" Saul") trembling and astonished, said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. Ac. ix. 6.

8 They saw no man, save Jesus only.] And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves. Mar. ix. 8. And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. Lu. ix. 36. When "they" (" the angel and Peter") were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that

they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again 10 from the dead. And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then 11 say the Scribes that Elias must first come? And Jesus answered

and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all 12 things. But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed.

leadeth unto the city, which opened to them of his own accord; and they went out and passed on through one street, and forthwith the angel departed from him. And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. Ac. xii. 10, 11.

9 Jesus charged them.] See chap. 16, 20. and com. Her parents (of the daughter of Jairus) were astonished (at her being raised from the dead); but he (Jesus) charged them that they should tell no man what was done. Lu. viii. 56.

Until the Son of man be risen again.] See verse 23. and chap. xvi. 21. They shall Scourge "him" ("Jesus"), and put him to death, and the third day he shall rise again. And "they" ("his disciples") understood none of these things; and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken. Lu. xviii. 33, 34. Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 46, 47.

10 Why then say the Scribes? &c.] See ver. 3, 4.; xi. 14. Some of them that stood there (when Jesus cried, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani) when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. And straightway one of them ran and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be; let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Mat. xxvii. 47, 48, 49.

11 And restore all things.] See chap. xi. 14. Many of the children of Israel shall he (John) turn to the Lord their God. Lu. i. 16. He (John) came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham, &c. Lu. iii. 3. 8. And he (God) shall send Jesus Christ (said Peter) which before was preached unto you;

whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. Ac. iii. 20, 21.

12 And they knew him not.] See chap. xi. 9-15. The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men? Answer me. And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? but if we shall say, Of men, they feared the people, for ali men count John that he was a prophet indeed. Mar. xi. 30, 31, 32. John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and ye say, He hath a devil. Lu. vii. 33. "He" ("Jesus") came unto his own, and his own received him not. John i. 11. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true; Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. But I receive not testimony from man; but these things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than that of John; for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do bear witness of me that the Father hath sent me. John v. 32-36. Of this man's seed hath God, arcording to his promise, raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus. When John had first preached before his (Christ's) coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he; but, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent; For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath-day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. Ac. xiii. 23–28.

But have done unto him, &c.] See chap. xi. 2. ; xiv. 3—10. And King Herod heard of him (Jesus), (for his name was spread abroad), and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him; others said, That it is Elias; and others said,
