John vi. 11. 23. Ac. xxvii. 35. He that regardeth the day regardeth it unto the Lord, and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. 20 Were filled.] See chap. v. 6. Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness as to fill so a great multitude? Mat. xv. 33. And Moses said (unto the Israelites), This shall be when the Lord shall give in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for the Lord heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him. And what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against the Lord. I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak to them (saith the Lord) saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread. Ex. xvi. 8. 12. When I have broken the staff of your bread (who break the commandments), ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight, and ye shall eat and not be satisfied. Le. xxvi. 26. As the Lord thy God liveth (said the widow of Zarephath) I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and be

hold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die. And Elijah said unto her, Fear not, go and do as thou hast said but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son; for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days; and the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail. 1 Ki. xvii. 12-16. His servitor said, What! should I set this (twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn, &c.) before an hundred men? He (Elisha) said again, Give the people, that they may eat, for thus saith the Lord, They shall eat and shall leave thereof. So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the Lord. 2 Ki. iv. 43, 44. The right eous eateth to the satisfying of his soul. Pr. xiii. 25. Ye have sown much and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages, earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. Hag. i. 6. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. Lu. i. 53. "They" ("the five thousand") did eat and were all filled, and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets. Lu. ix. 17. John vi. 7. 11.

And they took up, &c.] And they (the multitude) did all eat (of the seven loaves and a few little fishes) and were filled; and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full: and they that did eat were four thousand men, besides women and children. Mat. xv. 37, 38. O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Mat. xvi. 8-10. There cried a woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead, and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord, and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be

bond-men. And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? Tell me what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house save a pot of oil. Then he said, Go, borrow the vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels, borrow not a few; and when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. So she went from him, and shut the door upon her, and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out; and it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more: and the oil stayed. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, and sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest. 2 Ki. iv. 1-7. They did "all" (" the five thousand") eat, and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments and of the fishes. Mar. vi. 42, 43. So they did eat and were filled; and they took up of the broken meat that was left, seven baskets; and they that had eaten were about four thousand. Mar. viii. 8, 9. They reasoned among themselves (being warned of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of Herod), saying, It is because we have no bread. And when Jesus knew it he saith unto them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread? Perceive ye not yet, neither understand? Have ye your heart yet hardened? having eyes, see ye not? And having ears, hear ye not?

And do ye not remember? When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments, took ye up! And they said, Seven. And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand? Mar. viii. 16-21. When they (the free thousand) were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost; therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. John vi. 12—14.

21 About five thousand men.] The men sat down, in number about five thousand. Joka vi. 10. Many of them which heard the word (preached by Peter and John) believed; and the number of the men was about five thou sand; neither was there any among them that lacked; for as many as were possessors of

Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And 23 when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with 24 waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of 25 the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when 26 the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that ye always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound in every good work (as it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor; his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness), being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth, through us, thanksgiving to God. 2 Co. ix. 8-11. My God shall supply all your need, according to his riches in glory, by Christ Jesus. Phi. iv. 19. 22 Jesus constrained his disciples.] And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. Re. x. 2. 5. 8.

26 They were troubled.] And when the woman (the witch at Endor) saw Samuel (whom she had brought up for Saul), she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? For thou art Saul. And the king said unto her, Be not afraid, for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up, and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. 1 Sa. xxviii. 12-14. which made all my bones to shake; then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up; it stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes: there was silence, and I heard a voice, &c. Job iv. 14-16. His body (of the angel that appeared to Daniel) also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. And I Daniel alone saw the vision, for the men that were with me saw not the vision: but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves: therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision; and there remained no strength in me, for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength: yet I heard the voice of his words, and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a 'deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground, and behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees, and upon the palms of my hands. And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the word that I speak unto thee, and stand upright, for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel! for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. Da. x. 6-12. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense, and there appeared unto "him" ("Zacharias") an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. Lu. i. 10-12. As they (the women who came to the sepulchre) were much perplexed thereabout (at not finding the body of the Lord Jesus), behold, two men stood by them in shining garments; and as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? And as "they" ("the apostles") thus spake (concerning Christ's appearance to the two disciples going to Emmaus), Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures.

Lu. xxiv. 4, 5. 36. 45. When she (Rhoda) knew Peter's voice (who had been imprisoned by Herod), she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in and told (those who were gathered together praying) how Peter stood before the gate. And they said unto her, Thou art mad; but she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. Ac. xii. 15. And in the midst of the seven candlesticks (I saw) one like unto the Son of man; and when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen: and have the keys of hell and of death. Re. i. 13. 17, 18.

Ac. xxiii. 11.

It is I.] Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord, the first, and with the last, I am He. Fear thou not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God. I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Fear not, thou worm, Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Isa. xli. 4. 10. 14. Why are ye troubled (said Jesus to his disciples)? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. Lu. xxiv. 38, 39. He saith unto them (who saw him walking on the sea), It is I; be not afraid. John vi. 20. Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God; believe also in me. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. John xiii. 36-38. I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. Ro. xii. 3.

29 He walked on the water, &c.] Why could we not cast him out (said the disciples)? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief (ye could_not_cast_out_the unclean spirit from the lunatic). For verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard-seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Mat. xvii. 19, 20. Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig-tree (which withered away); but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea, it shall be done. Mat. xxi. 21. If thou canst believe (said Jesus to the father of him who had the dumb and deaf spirit), all things are possible to him that believeth. Mar. ix. 23. Ro. iv. 19, 20. I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me. Phi. iv. 13.

30 When he saw the wind boisterous, &c.] Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee (saith the damsel to Peter in the palace); but he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth! And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them, for thy speech bewrayeth thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus; Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly. Mat. xxvi. 69-75. When the servant of the man of God (Elisha) was risen early, and gone forth, behold an host (sent by the king of Syria to apprehend Elisha) compassed the city both with horses and chariots. Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation; the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest; and when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the
