good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good 38 seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the 39

38 Field is the world.] This Gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come. Mat. xxiv. 14. Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and earth: Go ye therefore and teach all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Mat. xxviii. 18, 19, 20. Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature; he that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then, after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Mar. xvi. 15-20. Thus it is written; and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 46, 47. Have they not heard? Yea, verily, their sound went unto all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Ro. x. 18. Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my Gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ (according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret since the world began; but now is made manifest, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith), to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ, for ever. Amen. Ro. xvi. 25, 26, 27. We give thanks to God, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, for the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the Gospel, which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth. Col. i. 3. 6. And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting Gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people. Re. xiv. 6.

The good seed are the children of the kingdom.] A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. Ps. xxii. 30. It pleased the Lord to bruise him (Christ); he hath put him to grief. When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Is. liii. 10. I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God. Ho. ii. 23. I will hiss for them and gather them; for I have redeemed them; and they shall increase as they have increased; and I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children and turn again. Zec. x. 8, 9. As many as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name; which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John i. 12, 13. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. John xii. 24. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God; and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him; that we may be also glorified together. Ro. viii. 16, 17. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures. Ja. i. 18. Hearken, my beloved brethren; hath not God chosen the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? Ja. ii. 5. See that ye love one another with a pure heart, fervently; being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 1 Pe. i. 22, 23. the sons of God, and it what we shall be, but we shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Every man that hath this hope in him (Christ) purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John iii. 2. 3. 9.

Beloved, now are we doth not yet appear know that when he

The children of the wicked one.] See verse 19. I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Ge. iii. 15. Ye are of your father

.

devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are

the Devil (said Jesus to the Jews) and the lusts of your father ye will do; he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John viii. 44. O full of all subtilty and all mischief (said Paul to Elymas the sorcerer); thou child of the Devil; thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord ? Ac. xiii. 10. Many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction; whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. Phi. iii. 18, 19. He that committeth sin is of the Devil; for the Devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the Devil. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the Devil. Whosoever doeth not righteous ́ness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. John iii. 8. 10.

39 Enemy that sowed.] See verse 25. 28. We are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, speak we in Christ. 2 Co. ii. 17. But I fear lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ: for such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 2 Co. xi. 3. 13. And no marvel, for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light; there fore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 2 Co. xi. 14, 15. You hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Ep. ii. 1, 2. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil; for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ep. vi. 11, 12. Then shall that wicked be revealed whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. 2 Th. ii. 8. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image; these both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. Re. xix. 20.

And he (the angel having the key of the bot tomless pit) laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled; and after that he must be loosed a little season. And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to deceive the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them; and the Devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Re. xx. 2, 3. 7—10.

The harvest is the end of the world.] See verse 49. And as he (Jesus) sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? Mat. xxiv. 3. Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come, get you down, for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. Joel iii. 13. Another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle and reap; for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe. And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped. And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. Re. xiv. 15-19.

And the reapers are the angels.] When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory. Mat. xxv. 31. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before "him" (“the Ancient of Days"); thousand thousands ministered unto him: and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the judgment was set, and the books were opened. Da. vii. 10. To you who are troubled (God will recompense) rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from

the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in 40 the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man 41 shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall 42 cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnash

heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ; who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. 2 Th. i. 7-10. And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of "these" ("false teachers"), saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, &c. Jude 14.

40 Tares.] See verse 30.

41 The Son of man, &c.] And he (the Son of man) shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Mat. xxiv. 31. Then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. Mar. xiii. 27. When "he" ("God") bringeth in the Firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? He. i. 6, 7. 14. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne, and the beasts, and the elders, and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. Re. v. 11, 12. See chap. xv. 13.

And they shall gather out of his kingdom.] See verse 49. Woe unto the world, because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh. Mat. xviii. 7. Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences, contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. Ro. xvi. 17, 18. There were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought

them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction; and many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 2 Pe. ii. 1, 2.

And them which do iniquity.] See chap. vii. 22, 23. Unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness (God will render), indignation, and wrath, tribulation, and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil. In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my Gospel. Ro. ii. 8, 9. 16. There shall in no wise enter into it (the new Jerusalem) any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie; but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. Re. xxi. 27.

42 Cast them into a furnace.] See chap. iii. Then shall he (the Judge in the last day) say unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the Devil and his angels. Mat. xxv. 41. Thou shalt make "them" (the “enemies of the Lord") as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger; the Lord shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them. Ps. xxi. 9. Whoso falleth not down (said the herald of Nebuchadnezzar) and worshippeth (the golden image), shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Now if ye be ready (said the king to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego), that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands? Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve, is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. Da. iii. 6. 15-17. Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Therefore because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Da. iii. 21, 22. In hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom; and he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on

43 ing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. 44 Again, The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field;

me, and send Lazarus (said the rich man), that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. Lu. xvi. 23, 24. The same (who may worship the beast, &c.) shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. Re. xiv. 10. The beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. Re. xix. 20. The Devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire; this is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Re. xx. 10. 14, 15. But the fearful, and the unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. Re. xxi. 8.

Wailing and gnashing of teeth.] See verse 50 and chap. viii. 12. Bind him (that had not a wedding garment) hand and foot (said the king who made a marriage for his son), and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xxii. 13.

43 Shall the righteous shine forth.] Come, ye blessed of my Father (will the king say to those on his right hand), inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; and these (on the left hand) shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal. Mat. xxv. 34. 46. They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness, as the stars for ever and ever. Da. xii. 3. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differeth from another star in glory; so also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption; it is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: it is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body; there is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul.

the last Adam was made a quickening spirit, Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual; but that which is natural, and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy; and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. Now this, I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump (for the trumpet shall sound), and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed; for this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality: so when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord; forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Co. xv. 41-54. 58. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away. Re. xxi. 3, 4. I saw no temple therein (in the new Jerusalem), for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it; and the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon to shine in it; for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. Re. xxi. 22, 23. See chap. xxv. 46.

In the kingdom of their Father.] I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine (said Jesus to his disciples) until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. Mat. xxvi. 29. Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Lu. xii. 32. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me. La. xxii. 29. Hearken, my beloved brethren, hath not God chosen the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? Ja. ii. 5.

44 Like unto treasure.] See chap. vi. 21. So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom,

the which when a man hath found he hideth, and for joy there

and apply thine heart to understanding; yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding, if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. Pr. ii. 2-5. How much better is it to get wisdom than gold? And to get understanding, rather to be chosen than silver? Pr. xvi. 16. Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it? Pr. xvii. 16. Through desire a man having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom. Pr. xviii. 1. Jesus said unto "them" (" the multitude”), I am the bread of life, he that cometh to me shall never hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John vi. 35. What soever things were written aforetime, were written for our learning, that we, through patience and comfort of the Scriptures, might have hope. Ro. xv. 4. As it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him; but God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit, for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 1 Co. ii. 9, 10. I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, that their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Col. ii. 1-3. Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Col. iii. 3, 4. 16.

For joy thereof.] If thou wilt be perfect (said Jesus to him who asked what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life), go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven, and come and follow me. Then answered Peter, and said unto "him" ("Jesus"), Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee, what shall we have therefore? Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundred fold, and shall inherit everlasting life. Mat. xix. 21. 27, 29. Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Lu. xiv. 33. When he (the ruler who asked what shall I do to inherit eternal life) heard this (that he should

sell all that he had) he was very sorrowful : for he was very rich. And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God. Lu. xviii. 23, 24. "He" ("Zaccheus" to whom Jesus said, To-day I must abide at thy house) made haste and came down (from the Sycamore tree), and received him joyfully, and when they (the Jews) saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. And Zaccheus stood and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. Lu. xix. 6-8. All that believed were together, and had all things common, and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness, and singleness of heart; praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Ac. ii. 44-47. The multitude of them that believed were of one heart, and of one soul, neither said any of them, that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common; and with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold; and laid them down at the apostles' feet, and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. Ac. iv. 32-35. What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ; yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord; for whom I have suffered the loss of all things; and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Phi. iii. 7, 8, 9. Ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. He. x. 34. By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. He. xi. 24, 25, 26.
