Ps. cxxx. 7, & In that day thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee, though thou wast angry with me; thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength, and my song; he also is become my salvation. Is. xii. 1, 2. Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together. Who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I, the Lord? And there is no God else besides me; a just God, and a Saviour; there is none besides me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. I will take you (Israel) from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. Ez. xxxvi. 24-28. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righte ousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Da. ix. 24. and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. Ac. v. 31. Of this man's (David's) seed hath God, according to his promise, raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus. Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: and by him, all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. Ac. xiii. 23. 38, 39. Christ loved the Church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it, with the washing of water, by the word; that he might present it to himself a glorious Church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish. Ep. v. 25, 26, 27. It pleased the Father, that in him should all fulness dwell, and (having made peace through the blood of his cross) by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you that were sometime alienated, and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh, through death, to present you holy, and unblameable, and unreproveable in his sight: if ye continue in the faith, grounded, and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the Gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven. Col. i. 19-23. Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God, and our Saviour Jesus Christ: who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Tit. ii. 13, 14. He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. He. vii. 25. If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sín. 1 John i. 7. If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John ii. 1, 2. Whosoever abideth in him, sinneth not. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 1 John iii. 6. 5. Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first-begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth; unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God, and his Father; to him be glory, and dominion, for ever and ever, Amen. Re. i. 5, 6. What are these (said one of the elders to John) which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. 22 That it might be fulfilled, &c.] And (Joseph) was there (in Egypt) until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my Son. And he came (having heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea, in the room of his father Herod), and dwelt in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. Mat. ii. 15.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. Mat. v. 17. He (Jesus) cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. Mat. viii. 16, 17. And (Jesus) charged them (the multitudes that followed him) that they should not make him known: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold my servant whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive nor cry, neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. Mat. xii. 16-21. Without a parable spake he (Jesus) not unto them: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. Mat. xiii. 35. All this was done (the disciples finding an ass tied, and a colt with her) that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold thy king cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. Mat. xxi. 4. And he (Solomon) said (having dedicated the temple and brought the ark into the holy place), Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which spake with his mouth unto David my father, and hath with his hand fulfilled it, saying, Since the day that I brought forth my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel, to build an house, that my name might be therein, but I chose David to be over my people Israel. like thee, who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him. Thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day. 1 Ki, viii. 15–24. Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, (that the word of the Lord, by the mouth of Jeremiah, might be

fulfilled,) the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia (to make proclamation for building the temple). Ezr. i. 1. These are the days of vengeance (when Jerusalem is compassed with armies); that all things which are written may be fulfilled. Lu. xxi. 22. And he (Jesus) said unto them (his disciples), These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you: that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms concerning me. Lu. xxiv. 44. If he (in the law) called them Gods (said Jesus) unto whom the word of God came, and the Scripture cannot be broken, say ye of him whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest, because I said, I am the Son of God? John x. 35, 36. Though he (Jesus) had done so many miracles before" them" ("the Jews"), yet they believed not on him: that the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, and be converted, and I should heal them. John xii. 37-40. Now (said Jesus) have "they" ("the Jews") both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. John xv. 24, 25. While I was with "them" ("his disciples") in the world (said Jesus), I kept them in thy name (holy Father): those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled. John xvii. 12. Then asked he "them" ("who came with Judas") again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: that the saying might be fulfilled which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. John xviii. 7, 8, 9. Let us not rend "it" ("Jesus's coat"), but cast lots for it (said the soldiers) whose it shall be; that the Scripture might be fulfilled which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did east lots. These things were done (that the soldiers brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him; but they brake not Jesus's legs) that the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again, another Scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they

pierced. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scriptures might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. John xix. 24. 36, 37. 28. Those things which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. Ac. iii. 18. Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath-day; they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. Ac. xiii. 26-29. God hath put in their hearts (the ten horns of the beast) to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. Re. xvii. 17. See chap. xii. 17.

33 A virgin shall be with child, &c.] The Lord himself shall give you a sign (said the Lord to Ahaz), Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel. Is. vii. 14. And he (the king of Assyria) shall pass through Judah (that refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son); he shall overflow and go over; he shall reach, even to the neck, and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel. Is. viii. 8.

God with us.] Lo, I am with you alway (said Jesus to his disciples), even unto the end of the world. Amen. Mat. xxviii. 20. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Ps. xlvi. 7. 11. Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment, and with justice, from henceforth, even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Is. ix. 6, 7. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Is. xii. 2. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John i. 14. the Gospel of Christ, concerning his Son Jesus Christ, which was made of the seed of David, according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead. Ro. i. 1. 3, 4. (My kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites) whose are the fathers, and of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ came; who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. Ro. ix. 5. God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 2 Co. v. 19. Without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness; God was manifest in the flesh, justified in spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Ti. iii. 16. The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen. 2 Ti. iv. 22.

some great thing wouldest thou not have done it? How much rather then, when he saith to thee, wash and be clean? Then went he down and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God, and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child: and he was clean. 2 Ki. v. 11-14. His (Jesus) mother said unto the servants (at the feast of the marriage in Cana of Galilee), Whatsoever he saith unto you do it. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the water pots (which were set there after the manner of the purifying of the Jews) with water. And they filled them up to the brim: and he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast and they bare it. John ii. 5-8. By faith, Noe being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house. By faith, Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed. By faith, Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. By faith "they" ("the Israelites") passed through the Red Sea. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not. The time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jepthae; of David also and Samuel, and of the prophets, who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. He. xi. 7, 8. 24-34. Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou When they went into the tent of the how faith wrought with his works, and by congregation, and when they came near unto works was faith made perfect. Ye see then how that by and said, Behold, I thought, he will surely come works a man is justified, and not by faith out to me, and stand, and call on the name only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harof the Lord his God, and strike his hand lot justified by works, when she had received over the place, and recover the leper. And he (God) said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up and went unto the place of which God had told him. Ge. xxii. 2, 3. Thus did Moses, according to all that the Lord commanded him so did he. And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it, as the Lord commanded Moses. And he lighted the lamps before the Lord as the Lord commanded Moses. And he burnt sweet incense thereon, as the Lord commanded Moses.

And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling-clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Lu. ii. 4-7.

Bethlehem of Judea.] See verse 5. Thou Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Mic. v. 2. Unto you is born this day (said the angel to the shepherds) in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. Lu. ii. 11. 15. Hath not the Scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? John vii. 42.

Of Herod the king.] See verse iii. 19. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of

the people be. Ge. xlix. 10. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy; know, therefore, and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem, unto the Messiah, the Prince, shall be seven weeks and threescore and two weeks. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Yet once, it is a little while; and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; and I will shake all nations; and the Desire of all nations shall come; and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts; the silver is mine and the gold is mine; the glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former; and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.
