IN originally offering the present work to the public, the author stated, that having, with some little toil to himself, obtained a mite, he cheerfully cast it into the sacred treasury, in the hope that it might be accepted, and turned to some good account by the great Lord of the temple, who looks more at the intention of the donor than at the amount of the extrinsic gift. He now feels himself constrained to record his humble and grateful sense of obligation for the unexpectedly favourable acceptance which his little volume has met with, not only in his own native land, but on the Continent, in several translated editions.
