Man like Himself in his own image; now
In the more blessed reparation,

The heavens bow,

Eternity took the measure of a span;
And said,

"Let us make ourselves like man;

And not from man the woman take,
But from the woman, man."

Hallelujah, we adore

His name, whose goodness hath no ftore.

CHRIST.

CHRISTMAS HYMN.

NALM on the listening ear of night

CAL

Where wild Judea ftretches far

Her silver-mantled plains!

Celestial choirs, from courts above,
Shed sacred glories there;

And angels, with their sparkling lyres,
Make mufic on the air.

The answering hills of Palestine
Send back the glad reply;

And greet, from all their holy heights,
The dayspring from on high.

On the blue depths of Galilee
There comes a holier calm,

And Sharon waves, in solemn praise,
Her filent groves of palm.

"Glory to God!" the sounding skies
Loud with their anthems ring;
Peace to the earth, - good-will to men,
From heaven's Eternal King!

Light on thy hills, Jerusalem!

The Saviour now is born!

And bright on Bethlehem's joyous plains
Breaks the first Christmas morn.

Rev. E. H. Sears.

A HYMN OF THE NATIVITY, SUNG BY THE

SHEPHERDS.

LOOMY night embraced the place

GL

Where the noble infant lay:

The babe look'd up, and show'd His face;
In spite of darkness it was day.

It was Thy day, sweet, and did rise,
Not from the Eaft, but from thy eyes.

We saw thee in thy balmy nest,

Young dawn of our eternal day;
We saw thine eyes break from the East,
And chase the trembling fhades away :
We saw thee, and we bleft the night,
We saw thee by thine own sweet light.

Poor world, said I, what wilt thou do
To entertain this ftarry ftranger?

Is this the best thou canft bestow

A cold and not too cleanly manger? Contend, the powers of heaven and earth, To fit a bed for this huge birth.

Proud world, said I, cease your control,
And let the mighty babe alone,
The phoenix builds the phoenix's neft,
Love's architecture is his own.

The babe, whose birth embraves this morn,
Made his own bed ere he was born.

Welcome all wonders in one fight!

Eternity fhut in a span!

Summer in winter, day in night!

Heaven in earth, and God in man! Great little one, whose all-embracing birth Lifts earth to Heaven, ftoops Heaven to earth!

Welcome - tho' not to those gay flies,

Gilded i' th' beams of earthly kings,

Slippery souls in smiling eyes

But to poor shepherds, homespun things, Whose wealth's their flocks, whose wit's to be Well read in their fimplicity.

To Thee, meek Majefty, soft King,

Of fimple graces and sweet loves!

Man like Himself in his own image; now
In the more blessed reparation,

The heavens bow,

Eternity took the measure of a span;
And said,

"Let us make ourselves like man;

And not from man the woman take,
But from the woman, man."
Hallelujah, we adore

His name, whose goodness hath no ftore.
