CHAPTER I.

INTRODUCTION.-THE HIGH IMPORTANCE OF THE INQUIRY AS TO THE DIVINE ORIGIN OF DIVINE REVELATION.

THE inquiry into the truth and divine origin of Christianity, is one in which we cannot feel indifferent, if that were possible; and if possible, it is not desirable. From the constitution of our nature, as rational creatures, and the hopes and fears which all occasionally experience, we are led to take a deep interest in the question, Is the Bible a revelation from God, or is it not? It is true, many able and learned men have laboured, during the last sixteen hundred years, to establish the negative in regard to this question, but their work is yet only in its commencement. Notwithstanding the learning, talent, and ingenuity which they have brought to the task, the evidences of the divine authority of the Bible remain unimpaired; and that book holds the position to which it originally laid claim, as an authoritative communication
