CHAP. III. hot of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that Hoeth the will of God abideth for

God's love to us

2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall seo him as he is.

3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law; for sin is the transgression of the law.

18 Little children, it is the last ime; and as ye have heard that anichrist shall come, even now are here many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 19 They went out from us, but hey were not of us; for if they ad been of us, they would no Eoubt have continued with us: but hey went out, that they might be 6 Whosoever abideth in him nade manifest that they were not sinneth not: whosoever sinneth l of us. hath not seen him, neither known him.

20 But ye have an unction from he Holy One, and ye know all ings.

21 I have not written unto you ecause ye know not the truth, but ecause ye know it, and that no lie of the truth.

22 Who is a liar but he that deeth that Jesus is the Christ? He antichrist, that denieth the Famer and the Son.

23 Whosoever denieth the Son,
e same hath not the Father: [but
e that acknowledgeth the Son hath
e Father also.]

24 Let that therefore abide in
ou, which ye have heard from the
eginning. If that which ye have
eard from the beginning shall re-
ain in you, ye also shall continue
the Son, and in the Father.
25 And this is the promise that
hath promised us, even eternal

5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righte ousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

11 For this is the message that yo heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother, abideth in death.

28 And now, little children, abide 15 Whosoever hateth his brohim; that when he shall appear, ther, is a murderer: and ye know may have confidence, and not that no murderer hath eternal life. ashamed before him at his co-abiding in him. ng.

God's singular Love to us.
EHOLD what manner of love
the Father hath bestowed up-
us, that we should be called the

u not.

16 Hereby perceive we the love af God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothren.

17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18 My little children, let us not

love in word, neither in tongue, but I sent his Son to be the propitiation in deed and in truth. for our sins.

19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

23 And this is his commandment; That we should believe on the name of his son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

24 And he that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

CHAP. IV.

Against believing all Teachers.

B spirit, but try the spirits whe

ther they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God:

3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God. And this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

6 We are of God. He that knoweth God, heareth us; he that is not of God, heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

10 Herein is love, not that we loed God, but that he loved us, and 232

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one ano ther.

12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

14 And we have seen and do testify, that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love: and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him.

17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 is fear in

perfect, love caste the run love; but

cause fear hath torment. He that feareth, is not made perfect in love.

19 We love him, because he first loved us.

20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother, whom he hath seen, how can he love God, whom he hath not seen?

21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God, love his brother also.

I rejoiced greatly, that I found hy children walking in truth, as have received a commandment m the Father.

7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver, and an antichrist.

8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those, things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

And now I beseech thee, lady, as though I wrote a new comndment, unto thee, but that ch we had from the beginning, we love one another. And this is love, that we walk his commandments.
