SALOON A, nearest to the transept, is devoted to the earliest Italian and German painters who flourished before 1600. VESTIBULE 1, principally to the productions of North Italy, immediately preceding the Carracci in point of date. SALOON B, to the most perfect works of the Venetian School, and the Caracci themselves, confronting those of Rubens, Van Dyck, and Nicolas Poussin. VESTIBULE 2 contains almost exclusively paintings by Murillo. SALOON C is devoted to the works of Claude, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Velasquez, Zurbaran, the later Roman and Tuscan masters, with some of the choicest specimens of Flemish landscape-painting. STAIRCASE OF EASTERN GALLERY of the nave, near the exit from Saloon C, continues the series of pictures of the close of the seventeenth century, and includes many of the finest works of Canaletto, especially his views in Venice. The opposite STAIRCASE on the north side contains Canaletto's views of London taken during his residence there in 1746-8. THE EASTERN GALLERY, over the clock, contains paintings of the late Flemish School and Cabinet pictures by Dutch Masters. The numbers commence on the upper cross wall in the N. W. corner of Saloon A, and continue to the left across the doors and down the South wall. The numbers only provisionally arranged. Italian Art is confined to the South Wall throughout the Gallery. German, Flemish, and French Art is confined to the North Wall throughout all the sections. The Spanish is principally on the South Wall of Saloon C and in Vestibule No. 2. English Art is especially seen in the British Portrait Gallery; but a few early examples are hung on the North Wall. The pictures are so arranged as to present, in juxtaposition, on opposite sides of the Gallery, the contemporary works of Italy and Germany. Thus the paintings from Italy wrought about 1500 face those from Germany of the same period.
