LESSON. Jer. i. 17.

N those days: the word of the Lord came to me sayby rise

that I command thee. Fear not their presence: For I will make thee not to be afraid before them. For I have made thee this day a fortified city, a pillar of iron and a wall of brass over the whole land, to the kings of Juda and it's rulers to the priests and people of the earth. And they will make war against thee, but they shall not prevail: because I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee.

GRAD. Ps. 91. The righteous man, as p. 376.
GOSPEL. Mark vi. 17.

T that time: Herod sent and apprehended John, and

ther Philip's wife, for he had married her: And John said to Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's Wife: And Herodias laid snares for him, and would have put him to death, but could not. For Herod feared John. knowing he was a righteous and holy man. But he kept him in prison and having heard him, did many things for him, and heard him willingly. And on a convenient day, Herod made a supper for the princes, and tribunes, and the chief men of Galilee, for his birth-day. And when Herodias's daughter came in and danced, and pleased Herod, and those that sat with him; the King said to the damsel; Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee; and he sware to her; whatever thou shalt ask, tho' the half of my kingdom, I will give it thee. And going forth, she said to her mother; What shall I ask? And she said; The head of John the Baptist. And she immediately returned in'haste to the King, and asked, saying; I will that thou give me forthwith in a charger the head of John the Baptist. And the King was troubled; but for his oath's sake, and because of those that sat with him, he would not displease her; but sending the executioner, he commanded the head to be brought. And the executioner beheaded him in prison, and brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel, and she gave it to her mother. And his disciples hearing of it, came and took his body, and laid it in a sepulchre.
