PREFACE.

The design of the following little work is not to stimulate the prevailing taste for variety in religious reading, but rather to offer encouragement and assistance for the more diligent search into the inexhaustible mine of the word of God. There is indeed a treasure in our field, of unsearchable value and unlimited extent, but it is hidden from the superficial observer; and if the patient investigation and persevering industry of the miner be not emulated, we shall be poor in the midst of great riches.

The present collection of exercises is almost entirely the result of conversations at a breakfast table, where, the several parties contributing their share of unconnected materials, they gradually assumed the shape in which they are now offered, as examples of a scriptural study, which has been found edifying and delightful in one circle, and it is hoped (by the Divine blessing) may prove not less advantageous in others.

SCRIPTURAL STUDIES.

I.

COLOSSIANS iii. 16.

LET the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.

Let us ever search the Sacred Book as
I. The Word of Christ.

As written by His Spirit, 1 Pet. i. 10, 11.
As speaking by His authority, 1 Cor.
xiv. 37.
As testifying of His work, Luke xxiv. 44.
John v. 39. Acts x. 43. Rev. xix. 10.
As the instrument for the establishment

of His kingdom, Ps. xlv. 3-5; cx. 2, 3.

The "Word of Christ" is the Christian's treasury.

II. Let it dwell in us,
