The First Two Books of the Maccabees. 1. Quote passages from the N. T. which are illustrated by the following :

3. In what peculiar significations are åpxh and napakadeîv used in these books ? (the latter also in N. T.)

4. In what connexion is the βδέλυγμα ερημώσεως mentioned ? What appears to be meant by it? What is the Latin rendering? How did Josephus understand the expression ?

5. Και εξεπέτασαν το βιβλίον του νόμου περί ών εξηρεύνων τα έθνη του επιγράφειν επ' αυτών τα ομοιώματα των ειδώλων αυτών.

What is the Latin version, and how was it understood by the Roman Catholic commentators generally (and by Drusius) ?

What reading (suggested by the Syriac) is now adopted instead of παιδας ?

What is the curious reading of the Alex. ?

(4) συνήχθησαν συναγωγή Ιουδαίων ισχυροί δυνάμει από Ισραήλ. Ιουδαίων is obviously wrong; what is the correct reading ?

(e) εξέλιπε το αργύριον από των θησαυρών και οι φορολογοι χάριν της διχοστασίας.

What is the true reading for φορολογοι (restored by Drusius) ?

The use of xéply here is parallel to that in a passage in Galatians ; what is the passage?

7. What is remarkable about the order in which Daniel, Ananias, Azariah, and Misael are mentioned in 1 Macc. 2 ?

What bearing has this on the date of the book of Daniel ?

8. Another composition plausibly assigned to the time of the Maccabees is cited as Scripture in i Macc. What is it?

9. The author of 1 Macc. cites from Genesis certain words relating to Abraham. In what peculiarity does his citation agree with that of St. James ? 10. What accounts of the

death of Antiochus Epiphanes are given in i Macc. ; 2 Macc.; and by Polybius, respectively?

II. What is the discrepancy between i Macc. and 2 Macc. as to the battle between Judas and Lysias ?

Epistle to the Ephesians. 1. Discuss briefly the question of the genuineness of this Epistle. 2. Discuss the question to whom it was written.

Notice particularly in relation to this the absence of salutations; the words είγε ηκούσατε την οικονομίαν, κ.τ.λ., and the omission of εν Εφέσω in i. 1. What are the authorities for and against these words, and how is the omission or the insertion accounted for ?

3. What are the special significations in this Epistle of χαριτόω, αιών, εξουσία, πάροικος ? Where else does χαριτόω occur ?

4. Alford quotes from Tholuck the following account of the significations of μυστήριον :

(1) Such matters of fact as are inaccessible to reason and can only be known through revelation.

(2) Such matters as are patent facts, but the process of which cannot be entirely taken in by the reason.

(3) That which is no mystery in itself but by its figurative import.

Amongst the examples of the first he quotes Rom. xvi. 25; Eph. i. 9: of the second, 1 Cor. xiii. 2; Eph. v. 32: of the third, Matth. xiii. 11; 2 Thess. ii. 7.

Quote these passages, and show that they do not support the distinction of meanings above given.

What things in particular does St. Paul call uvothpia in this Epistle and in Thess. ?

5. Discuss the construction and rendering of the following :α. δ θεός και πατήρ του κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού.

ο. ο θεός του κυρίου ημών. δώη υμίν πνεύμα σοφίας και αποκαλύψεως εν επιγνώσει αυτού πεφωτισμένους τους οφθαλμούς της καρδιάς υμών είς το είδέναι, κ.τ.λ.

c. και ποιήσας τα άωφμτερα εν και το μεσότοιχον του φραγμού λύσας την έχθραν εν τη σαρκί αυτού τον νόμον των εντολών εν δόγμασιν καταργήσας:

Quote the passage in the Epistle to the Colossians parallel to (c).

6. κτισθέντες εν χριστώ Ιησού επί έργοις αγαθοίς οίς προητοίμασεν και θεός ίνα εν αυτοίς περιπατήσωμεν.

What different views are taken of the connexion of εν αυτοίς ?
Give other examples of this use of èni.

Discuss Baur's suggestion that we have here a post-apostolic attempt to reconcile St. Paul with St. James.

7. Write notes on

(α) εν τη κυβεία των ανθρώπων εν πανουργία προς την μεθοδείαν της πλάνης.

(5) εξ ου παν το σώμα συναρμολογούμενος και συμβιβαζόμενον διά πάσης αφής της επιχορηγίας κατ' ενέργειαν εν μέτρω ενος εκάστου μέρους. (Quote the parallel from Colossians.)

(α) εί γε αυτόν ηκούσατε και εν αυτώ εδιδάχθητε καθώς έστιν αληθεία εν τώ Ιησού, αποθέσθαι υμάς . τον παλαιον άνθρωπον τον φθειρόμενον κατά τας επιθυμίας της απατης. Correct the vulgar misconception of the spaced words.

(α) ηχμαλώτευσεν αιχμαλωσίαν. Where does this phrase occur besides ? () κατέβη εις τα κατώτερα της γης.

8. What are the various readings in the following, and in what authorities, respectively, are they found ?

(α) φωτίσαι πάντας τίς η οικονομία του μυστηρίου. (5) επιφαύσει σοι ο Χριστός. (c) εί τις αγαθώς προς οικοδομής της χρείας. (d) ακούσας την καθ' υμάς πίστιν εν τω κυρίω Ιησού και την αγάπην την εις πάντας τους αγίους.

9. Give the original of:
(a) “Not with eye service, as men pleasers.”

(6) “ Against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

(c) “That he might sanctify and cleanse it by the washing of water."

(d) “As God, for Christ's sake, hath forgiven you. Be ye therefore followers of God.”

MR. BURNSIDE.

1. If two equal spheres be drawn, having double contact with an ellipsoid, their centres being on one of the axes, and their common radius the mean proportional between the principal radii of curvature at the extremities of that axis; prove that the quadrics of revolution round this axis, and touching the spheres, determine by their intersection with the ellipsoid the two systems of lines of curvature.

2. Let o denote the angle between the geodesic tangents drawn from a point P, on an ellipsoid whose semiaxis major is p, to the line of curvature (eu) : T, r the tangents drawn from P to the spheres defined in question (1), and prove the following formula :

3. Determine the projection by lines parallel to the greatest or least axis on a plane of circular section of the locus of the intersection of

geodesic tangents to a line of curvature on an ellipsoid which cut at a given angle.

4. Find the locus of the foci of all central sections of a quadric.

5. Determine the equation of the developable generated by the tangent line to the curve common to two quadrics.

6. The element of a curve on a surface being expressed in terms of two variables u,v in the form

8. Prove that the polar plane with respect to the Hessian of any point on a cubic surface meets the tangent at that point in the line which joins the three points of inflection of the section of the cubic surface by the tangent plane.

9. Construct geometrically the perpendiculars on the tangent planes at the points where a given radius vector meets the two sheets of the wave surface.

10. Prove that one sheet of the wave surface is the polar reciprocal of the other sheet with respect to a certain ellipsoid.

II. Give the principal steps by which Clebsch calculated the equation of the surface which intersects a given surface, at the points of contact of lines which meet it in four consecutive points.

(a) Determine the order of “the flecnodal curve."

3. If 01, 02, 03, 04 be the four semivertical angles of four right cones with a common apex which intersect orthogonally, then
