LATIN HANDBOOK:

PASSAGES SET AT EXAMINATIONS FOR INDIA AND HOME CIVIL SERVICES, WOOLWICH, SANDHURST, ETC.

Including a PRAXIS of EXAMINATION PAPERS, specially arranged for Army Candidates.

By W. K. DALGLEISH, B.A.

London: LONGMANS, GREEN, & Co., Paternoster-Row.

THIS HANDBOOK has the following special features:

I. The specimen Examination Papers show the form and extent of the Examination in Latin for each of the Open Competitions.

II. Unpublished Examination Papers, obtained from private sources, have been largely laid under contribution.

III. All passages set for many years back at the more important Competitions have been included.

IV. The passages have been selected by the Examiners themselves. V. The collection is varied and extensive beyond precedent. VI. The Indexes form a guide to the Examinations, showing the frequency with which particular authors have been set, and the character of the passages chosen for each grade of the Open Competitions. VII. The Praxis, drawn up in the first instance for Woolwich and Sandhurst Candidates, is the outcome of much experience, and is equally useful for all Open Competitions, of which the new Army Entrance Examination is the type.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

'The fullest and most serviceable book of its kind which we remember to have seen; and it may be made no less useful as a copious Latin Praxis than as a Handbook to familiarise Candidates with the character of the examination at which they intend to compete.'-Educational Times.

'We heartily recommend the book as one of the most useful we have fallen in with.'The Schoolmaster.

'This Handbook is well adapted for the requirements of Candidates for the great Open Competitions. . The work has been compiled with care, and great judgment has been shown.'-Naval and Military Gazette.

'This Handbook will, in our opinion, prove of immense service to those Teachers whose task it is to prepare Candidates in Latin for any of the great Open Competitions.' -The Practical Teacher.

'Precisely the book long wanted for Candidates for the high prizes to be won in the great Open Competitive Examinations held by H. M. Civil Service Commissioners. The work supplies a great want alike to Tutors and Students for the Competitive Exami nations; and we trust it will soon be followed by a companion volume on Greek Language and Literature.'-The School Board Chronicle.

CHER MONSIEUR,
