pleasures will be enhanced by a reading from PETER PARLEY'S ANNUAL.

John Knox was of opinion that there ought to be a school in every parish, a grammar school in every borough, a college in every city. Had this book been in existence, he might, perhaps, have added that there ought to be a PETER PARLEY'S ANNUAL in every home.

I now take leave of my young friends. May their Christmas be merry, their New Year happy, their lives strewn with flowers. Let them ever remember what a wise man said "The fairest flower in the garden of creation is a young mind offering and unfolding itself to Divine Wisdom, as the heliotrope twines its sweet blossoms to the sun."

Each season has pleasures and blessings in store;
Be content and you're happy, if rich or if poor.
To know the best season to laugh and to sing,
Is summer, is winter, is autumu, is spring.

PETER PARLEY.

HIGH OR LOW? OR, A FRIEND IN NEED.

VERYBODY knows Merton Vale, of course, as the prettiest, most picturesque, and most healthy dale in Somersetshire. At least the impression in the minds of the residents is, that comparisons would be impossible; and that Merton is as important and as well known as London itself, with the special advantage of being country, not town. The Merton Valley folk have considerable opinions of their position in the country, and next to the national pride of being Englishmen, comes their boast of being Mertonians.
