Here thele ex traordinary geniufes u fed to pafs their hours in the mutual improvement Of their minds, and the cultivation of the vii tues; while their fellow-citizens, after imbruing their hands in civil carnage, were engaged in empty difputations and idler contefls. In this retirement he had the great affliétion to lofe his wife, a woman of excellent virtues and uncommon en dowments. On which occafion he wrote various canzonets, and dedicated them to the memory of his deceafed very dear wife, Anna Tooke Of Beere [b].
