THE present Series of Sermons for the Sundays and some other Holydays of the Christian Year was commenced on Advent Sunday, 1858. The Sermons have been composed by various hands. In general they have reference to some part of the Church Services of the Days to which they belong. They aim at setting forth simply, practically, and earnestly the truth, as it is in Jesus. It is hoped that these Sermons will furnish subjects for godly meditation to such as, from sickness or other cause, may be debarred from attending Public Worship, and that they will be found useful for distribution, as Tracts, by Clergymen and District Visitors. They may also supply a want, which has been expressed by settlers in distant Colonies, who, being, as yet, without regularly appointed ministers, feel, as each Lord's Day recurs, a longing desire for such counsel and encouragement as are conveyed to their brethren at home by addresses from the pulpit of the Parish Church. May the Holy Spirit bless this undertaking to the advance of the Gospel of Christ, and to the edification of His people! THE ADVENT OF OUR LORD. MATTHEW Xxi. 9. "Hosanna in the highest." (From the Gospel for Adrent Sunday.) THE portion of Scripture selected for the Gospel of to-day at first sight appears to be inappropriate. We look for it on Palm Sunday, but we are surprised to meet it to-day. But the reason for its selection seems to be this. The passage describes what was emphatically the Advent of our Lord,—the only time when He appeared, as it were, in His true character, dropped all reserve, and after living for thirty years as a carpenter, or travelling as a Galilean teacher, showed Himself as what He was-the King of the Jews. He now appears as the Son of David, makes a royal entrance into the capital city, Jerusalem, at the time of the greatest of their feasts. He appears in all His functions, as Prophet, Priest, King. The multitude said, "This is Jesus the Prophet of Nazareth of Galilee." He makes for the temple, as Priest. As King, He for the first time enters mounted.
