(a) Gospel is an old English word for good tidings.

(b) Tiberius Cefar was Emperour of Rome and fuccellor to Augustus,

(c) Pontius Pilate being Governour of Judea under Tiberius.

(d) Herod. The fon of that Herod the King who is mention'd in §. 13.

my messenger before thy face which shall prepare thy way before thee [and by E3. faias xl. 3.] The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the 5. Lord, make his paths ftraight. Every valley fhall be filled, and every mountain and hill fhall be brought low; and the crooked fhall be made ftraight, and the rough ways fhall be made Smooth; and all flesh shall fee the falvation of God.

And the people asked him, faying, 10. Luk, iii. what shall we do then?

He anfwereth and faith unto them, He 11. that bath two coats, let him impart to bim that bath none, and be that hath meat, let him do likewife.

Then came alfo (m) Publicans to be bap- 12. tized, and faid unto him, Mafter, what Shall we do?
