» And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he caused all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name, chap. xiii, 15-18.

VER. 5.

Καὶ ὁ τέταρτος ἄγγελος ἐξέχει τὴν φιά λην αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸν ἥλιον· καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτῷ καυματίσαι τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἐν πυρί.

a And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; band power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.

a And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood, chap. vi. 12. And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of hem was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise, viii. 12.

b And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, baving breastplates of fire and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths, chap. ix. 17--19.

Καὶ ἐκαυματίσθησαν οἱ ἄνθρωποι καῦμα μέγα, καὶ ἐβλασφήμησαν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ἔχοντος ἐξουσίαν ἐπὶ τὰς πληγὰς ταῦτας· καὶ οὐ μετενόησαν δοῦναι αὐτῷ δόξαν.

And men were scorched with great God, which hath power over these plagues : heat, and blasphemed the name of and they repented not to give him glory. * Or, burned.

• And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates ; band the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

VER. 18.

Ἰδοὺ, ἔρχομαι ὡς κλέπτης. Μακάριος ὁ γρηγορῶν, καὶ τηρῶν τὰ ἱμάτια αὑτοῦ, ἵνα μὴ γυμνὸς περιπατῇ, καὶ βλέπωσι τὴν ἀσχημοσύνην αὐτοῦ.

a Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

Καὶ ὁ ἕβδομος ἄγγελος ἐξέχεε τὴν φιά. λην αὑτοῦ εἰς τὸν ἀέρα· καὶ ἐξῆλθε φωνή μεγάλη ἀπὸ τοῦ ναοῦ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, ἀπὸ τοῦ θρόνου, λέγουσα· Γέγονε,

a And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty en earthquake, and so great.

Καὶ ἐγένετο ἡ πόλις ἡ μεγάλη εἰς τρία μέρη, καὶ αἱ πόλεις τῶν ἐθνῶν ἔπεσιν· καὶ Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη εμνήσθη ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ, δοῦναι αὐτῇ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θυμοῦ τῆς ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ.

CHAP. XVII.—VER. 1.

Θηρίον ὃ εἶδες, ἦν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι· καὶ μέλλει ἀναβαίνειν ἐκ τῆς ἀβύσσου, καὶ εἰς ἀπώλειαν ὑπάγειν· καὶ θαυμάσονται οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, (ὧν οὐ γέγραπται τὰ ὀνόματα ἐπὶ τὸ βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς ἀπὸ καταβομῆς κόσμου) βλέποντες τὸ θηρίον, ὅ, τι ἦν καὶ οὐκ ἔστι, καίπερ ἐστίν.

The beast that thou sawest was, and is not ; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and a go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder whose names were not bwritten in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

VER. 9.

*Ωδε ὁ νοῦς ὁ ἔχων σοφίαν. Αἱ ἑπτὰ κεφαλαί, ὄρη εἰσὶν ἑπτὰ, ὅπου ἡ γυνὴ κά θηται ἐπ ̓ αὐτῶν,

a And here is the mind which hath wisdom. b The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

VER. 10.

Καὶ βασιλεῖς ἑπτά εἰσιν· πέντε ἔπει σαν, καὶ ὁ εἷς ἐστιν, ὁ ἄλλος οὕτω ἦλθε καὶ ὅταν ἔλθῃ, ὀλίγον αὐτὸν δεῖ μεῖναι.

Καὶ τὸ θηρίον ὃ ἦν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι, καὶ αὐτὸς ὄγδοός ἐστι, καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἑπτά ἐστι, καὶ εἰς ἀπώλειαν ὑπάγει.

And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

VER. 12.

Καὶ τὰ δέκα κέρατα ἃ εἶδες, δέκα κα σιλεῖς εἰσιν, οἵτινες βασιλείαν οὔπω ἔλα βον, ἀλλ ̓ ἐξουσίαν ὡς βασιλεῖς μίαν ὥραν λαμβάνουσι μετὰ τοῦ θηρίου.

a And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet, but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
