a A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Purify your hearts, ye doubleminded, Jam. iv. 8. And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? If the LORD be God, follow him but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word, 1 Kings xviii. 21. Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images, Hos. x. 2. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon, Matt. vi. 24. As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things: in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other Scriptures, unto their own destruction, 2 Pet. iii. 16.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: * Or, evils.

A. D. cir. 60.

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison, iii. 1-8. In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth, Prov. x. 19, 20. He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction, xiii. 3. A soft answer turneth away wrath ; but grievous words stir up anger. The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness, xv. 1, 2. He that hath knowledge spareth his words; and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he

VER. 19.

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, a slow to speak, b slow to wrath:

* If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, that man's religion is vain, ver. 26. My brethren, be not many masters, know'ing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which, though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him, xviii. 13. Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof, 21. Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue, keepeth his soul from troubles, xxi. 23. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few. For a dream cometh through the multitude of business: and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words, Eccles. v. 2, 3.

But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed, and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him, 1 John iii. 17-19.
