RICHARD CAMERON.

thousand merks were offered for apprehending Cameron. And he wandered about in lonely places, preaching always where he could. He preached at New Monkland, where he had a most comforting and confirming day upon that soul-refreshing text-"And a man shall be as a hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest.'

Upon the 4th of July following, being eighteen days before his death, he preached at the Grass Waterside, near Cumnock. In his preface that day he said, 'There are three or four things I have to tell you this day, which I must not omit

then my work and my time will both be finished. And the first is this: As for the king upon the throne of Britain, after him there shall not be a crowned king of the name of Stuart in Scotland: Secondly, There shall not be an old Covenanter's head above ground, that swore these Covenants with uplifted hands, ere ye get a right Reformation set up in Scotland: Thirdly, A man shall ride a day's journey in the shires of Galloway, Ayr, and Clydesdale, and not see a reeking house, nor hear a cock crow, ere ye get a right Reformation; and several other shires will be little better. . When Christ comes to raise up His own work in Scotland, He will not want men enough to work for Him.'

The week following, Cameron preached in the parish of Crawford-John. Duneaton Water flows to the Clyde through these green upland pastures of Lanarkshire, and the wild thyme and shepherd's-purse sprinkled the sheep-nibbled grass where the few, faithful people, gathered round their brave minister. In the time of the sermon he fell a-weeping, and the greater part of the multitude also, so that there were few dry cheeks to be seen among them.'

For the sorrows which lay on Scotland lay heavy on his own soul; and the people were faint on. their moorlands, with the deathly, long strife.

desire for full possession of the heavenly inheritance, that he seldom prayed in a family, asked a blessing, or gave thanks, but he prayed for patience to wait until the Lord's appointed time came.'

And the end came. It was the 22nd of July, and a few of his friends had gathered with Cameron on the edge of the Airsmoss. This high and lonely moorland tract, lying between its two lovely boundaries of the Waters of Lugar and Ayr, has gathered song and story round it since, as the scene of the death of Cameron. It was in the summer afternoon, that they saw, in the sunny distance, the glitter of Earlshall's dragoons riding down upon them in the moor. And they took brief council together.

'Lord, spare the green, and take the ripe,' thrice prayed Richard Cameron.

And then they gathered close. They were all armed men, and Hackston of Rathillet was their captain. And they fought so bravely that their very enemies admired each 'like an Achilles,' it is said. Yet they were but sixty-three countrymen against a hundred and twelve dragoons. Nearly the first fell Cameron.

'His head and hands were cut off, and taken to Edinburgh. His father being in prison for the same cause, they carried them to him, to add grief unto his former sorrow, and enquired at him if he knew them. Taking his son's head and hands, which were very fair-being a man of fair complexion like himself-he kissed them, and said, "I know-I know them; they are my son's, my own dear son's. the Lord-good is the will of the Lord, who cannot wrong me nor mine, but hath made goodness and mercy to follow us all our days." After which, by the order of the Council, his head was fixed upon the Netherbow Port.'

Sitting quiet in the twilight, now the long day's work is done

Listening to the children's voices, sharing in their glee and fun.

Save those bursts of silvery laughter, not a sound the stillness mars; Tenderly through dusky foliage shine the first few evening stars.

There are wrinkles on the forehead that was once so smooth and fairLines that speak of pain and sorrow, streaks of silver in the hair.

Ah, but so the children tell her, snowy locks form diadem,

And although the face be faded, has it grown less dear to them?

Do the sweet eyes shine less brightly, that they oft have shone through tears? Is the heart less brave and gentle for the pressure of the years?

Question him who fondly cherished eager girl and blushing bride

Is her love less real, I wonder, now that love is purified?

In the tide of life around her still her own

true life doth swell,

There is many a holy secret, pain has given her strength to tell.

Sorrow she has known, and suffering, known
and made a friend of each,
Learnt from them the faith and patience
God has meant that they should teach.

Very bravely she has laboured in the noon

tide's heat and glareCometh very sweet and peaceful pleasant breath of evening air. Some there are perchance might murmur that youth's joys have lost their zest, But to souls like hers most precious are those twilight hours of rest.
