in Ebertag a wicked man who was envious of Hans Zechen's prosperity, and who thought that he would take away some of the treasure which, he felt sure, was in the shop till. He knew that Hans kept no watch dog or little terrier to guard his shop. So, one night, when Hans Zechen had gone to his bed, and was sound asleep, this robber broke into his shop, and began looking for money. Just then his eye fell on the pocket of Hans' coat, which seemed to have something in it. In he put his hand to get the treasure, when Fritz, awakening from his sleep, caught him by the thumb, and made him cry out; nor would he let go till Hans, hearing the noise, came down, and the robber was caught. So you see how little Fritz, small though he was, saved his master's property. And there is no one, however little, but can be of some service, and do some good. Samuel was a little boy when he went to live with Eli, and serve God in the temple. The Jewish maiden was but a little girl when she persuaded her master to go to Elisha to be cured of his leprosy. It was but a small drop of rain which fell into the oyster and became a pearl. 'Twas but a little cloud, no bigger than a man's hand, that Elijah saw in the heavens, but it grew and grew, until it spread over the whole heavens, and copious showers fell to revive a parched and desolate land. And so it always is. Small beginnings have great endings. Let us see to it that what we do is begun, continued, and ended in the fear of God. Then shall we have the blessing of God resting upon us-the smile of our heavenly Father to encourage us in all our ways. This little boat makes no advance, And then it sinks again. Why could the little boat not sail? So with the soul! one cherished sin, Will draw us downward to the earth, Then, in the promised strength of God, And Christ, your Pilot, trust, And fill you with His love; M. NEIL. PRIZE BIBLE QUESTIONS. Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. (Col. iii. 17-25.) The Prayer. Satisfy us, O Lord, with Thy mercy; forgive us our sins, and grant us Thy Holy Spirit. Bless all churches, all Christian missions, all Day and Sabbath Schools, all Temperance Societies, and every other agency for good in our own and other lands. O send forth Thy light and Thy truth! May the nations know Thy name, and learn to love and serve Thee, that there may be peace on earth, and good-will among all men. For Jesus' sake. Amen. KNEW a little cottage once It seems so long ago: The sweetest home in all the world, I used to hear the merry feet And children's laughter floating out There was no music half so sweet, Well I remember what there was:- The stories were so strange, so new, The very roses bent to hear There was the wondrous picture book And the rose leaves bent o'er Freddy's head, Long years have rolled; the cottage door, And other faces known. Still thoughts do rise and wing their way Time parted both these loving hearts; For they kept the peace and love that grew ADYONA. HOME LESSONS ON THE OLD PATHS. THE MODEL PRAYER. THE preface of the Lord's prayer, (which is, Our Father which art in heaven,) teacheth us to draw near to God with all holy reverence and confidence, as children to a father, able and ready to help us; and that we should pray with and for others. 'Can you tell me which word of the preface to the Lord's prayer teaches us to pray with and for others?' It must be the first word, Our,' Nelly replied. Yes; the little word Our, with which the prayer begins, shews us that it is a family prayer-a prayer for the children of God to offer up. And what word teaches us to draw near to God with all holy reverence and confidence?' "Father" is the word,' said Alice. 'The endearing name Father gives us wonderful encouragement to pray. Read Christ's own explanation of the word Father in the Lord's prayer. (Luke xi. 11-13.') "If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?", "The words, how much more? tell us that a parent's love to his child is only a faint emblem of the far greater love of our heavenly Father. How do you know that your parents love you?' 'Oh, mamma, we know quite well. Papa and you are always working for us, and giving us things, and teaching us, and taking us places, and doing every thing for us.' 'We do love you very tenderly, and try to take care of you, and to make you very happy; but all that we can do for you is very, very little when compared with what God has done for us. Often we cannot do for you what we would; but God is |
