in Ebertag a wicked man who was envious of Hans Zechen's prosperity, and who thought that he would take away some of the treasure which, he felt sure, was in the shop till. He knew that Hans kept no watch dog or little terrier to guard his shop. So, one night, when Hans Zechen had gone to his bed, and was sound asleep, this robber broke into his shop, and began looking for money. Just then his eye fell on the pocket of Hans' coat, which seemed to have something in it. In he put his hand to get the treasure, when Fritz, awakening from his sleep, caught him by the thumb, and made him cry out; nor would he let go till Hans, hearing the noise,came down, and the robber was caught. So you see how little Fritz, small though he was, saved his master's property. And there is no one, however little, but can be of some service, and do some good. Samuel was a little boy when he went to live with Eli, and serve God in the temple. The Jewish maiden was but a little girl when she persuaded her master to go to Elisha to be cured of his leprosy. It was but a small drop of rain which fell into the oyster and became a pearl. 'Twas but a little cloud, no bigger than a man's hand, that Elijah saw in the heavens, but it grew and grew, until it spread over the whole heavens, and copious showers fell to revive a parched and desolate land. And so it always is. Small beginnings have great endings. Let us see to it that what we do is begun, continued, and ended in the fear of God. Then shall we have the blessing of God resting upon us—the smile of our heavenly Father to encourage us in all our ways.

CUT THE CORD.

I OFTTIMES sat upon the shore,

And watched a little boat; From day to day it scarcely moved From its accustomed spot. While gallant vessels spread their sails To catch the favouring breeze: And reached the haven of their hopes Across the stormy seas,

This little boat makes no advance,
For there it doth remain;
It only rises with the tide,

And then it sinks again.

Why could the little boat not sail?
The secret soon I found;
One slender cord, scarce visible,
Had held it to the ground.

So with the soul! one cherished sin,
If we but love and hide,

Will draw us downward to the earth,
There chained we must abide.
And Sabbaths come and blessings flow,
And leave that soul the same;
Though slightly moved by Sabbath tides,
It will enslaved remain.

Then, in the promised strength of God,
The bond asunder burst;
And take the Bible as your chart,

And Christ, your Pilot, trust,
To steer you safe amid the rocks,

And fill you with His love;
And waft you safely to the shores
Of endless rest above.

PRIZE BIBLE QUESTIONS.

Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. (Col. iii. 17-25.)

The Prayer.

Satisfy us, O Lord, with Thy mercy; forgive us our sins, and grant us Thy Holy Spirit.

Bless all churches, all Christian missions, all Day and Sabbath Schools, all Temperance Societies, and every other agency for good in our own and other lands.

O send forth Thy light and Thy truth! May the nations know Thy name, and learn to love and serve Thee, that there may be peace on earth, and good-will among all men. For Jesus' sake. Amen.

I

THE COTTAGE DOOR.

THE MODEL PRAYER.

KNEW a little cottage once

It seems so long ago:-
The sweetest home in all the world,
At least I thought it so.

I used to hear the merry feet
Go tinkling on the floor,
And children's laughter floating out
At the open cottage door.
There was no music half so sweet,
Except, perhaps, the lay
Of happy little birds that sang
There all the summer day.
Well I remember what there was:-
Where roses clambered o'er ;-
A downy nest, all full of love,
Above the cottage door.
There, many a sunny afternoon,
When they had played their fill,
Winnie and Fred would sit them down
Upon the dainty sill.

The stories were so strange, so new,
Though often heard before,
The very roses bent to hear

About the cottage door.

There was the wondrous picture book
Spread out on Winnie's knee;

And the rose leaves bent o'er Freddy's head,
For they, too, wished to see.
No little birds, in downy nest,
E'er loved each other more
Than these two tender little hearts
Beside the cottage door.

Long years have rolled; the cottage door,
With roses still o'ergrown,
Has heard the sound of other feet,

And other faces known.

Still thoughts do rise and wing their way
From many a palmy shore,
And cluster, like the roses, round
The dear old cottage door..
Time parted both these loving hearts;
Care wrinkled each fair brow;
Each head is still with glory crowned,
But the gold is silver now.
Though clouds about them hung, they knew
That sunshine was in store,

For they kept the peace and love that grew
Round the old cottage door.

HOME LESSONS ON THE OLD PATHS.
THE MODEL PRAYER.

THE preface of the Lord's prayer, (which is, Our Father which art in heaven,) teacheth us to draw near to God with all holy reverence and confidence, as children to a father, able and ready to help us; and that we should pray with and for others.

'Can you tell me which word of the preface to the Lord's prayer teaches us to pray with and for others?'

It must be the first word, Our,' Nelly replied.

Yes; the little word Our, with which the prayer begins, shews us that it is a family prayer-a prayer for the children of God to offer up. And what word

teaches us to draw near to God with all holy reverence and confidence?'

666 Father" is the word,' said Alice.

'The endearing name Father gives us wonderful encouragement to pray. Read Christ's own explanation of the word Father in the Lord's prayer. (Luke xi. 11-13.')

"If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?",

'The words, how much more? tell us that a parent's love to his child is only a faint emblem of the far greater love of our heavenly Father. How do you know that your parents love you?'

'Oh, mamma, we know quite well. Papa and you are always working for us, and giving us things, and teaching us, and taking us places, and doing every thing for us.'

'We do love you very tenderly, and try to take care of you, and to make you very happy; but all that we can do for you is very, very little when compared with what God has done for us. Often we cannot do for you what we would; but God is
