The ranch was named "Stoneybroke" for two reasons. The first part of the name came from the fact that part of the ranch had a rocky mountain pasture and the second part of the name came from the fact that they were broke after buying it.

In 1940 Carlton resigned his position with the Commission Co. to devote his entire time to ranching. He enlarged his registered Aberdeen Angus herd, but the war years prevented his developing his herd as he would have liked, because of the demand for commercial cattle. During this time, with the help of only one man, he produced over a million pounds of commercial beef a year. He rapidly reduced the number of steers he handled and built his Angus herd to around five hundred head. After the war, he began looking beyond that day to years down the road. He watched other Angus breeders become enthused over the "New Type" of Angus, short and blocky, but due to the schooling of his talented father, he could not bring himself to believe this was the way to go in the beef industry.

He came across a bull which was to be shipped to market at the J. Garrett Tolan farm. He saw the calves, and felt that this was the bull he wanted to start his program. "Emulous of Sangamon" was then taken home to start one of the greatest breeding programs ever built in the Angus world. "The Emulous Story" was launched.

A rigid performance program was begun, keeping and selecting only the superior calves. Weaning weights were kept on each calf, cows were culled, weaned bulls were fed to know their ability on efficient feed conversion and for sufficient size and structure.

A strong carcass selecting program was begun not with just one herd bull, but year after year with each bull that was making his mark on the breeding program. Thus all guess work was completely taken from the program. He knew which bull could or could not continue to improve the Emulous strain. He had the foresight to see beyond that day and realize that beef cattle were designed to produce beef. He could see that the day was coming when each and every seed
