Many will say unto me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? &c. and then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.-Matt. vii. 22, 23. Luke xiii. 25-27.

He heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for awhile, &c.—Matt. xiii. 20, 21.

but he shall say, I tell you I know you not whence you are: depart from me, all ye workers, &c. Ye shall see Abraham, &c. in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.-Luke xiii. 25-28.

Ye are they which justify yourselves, but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed amongst men, is abomination in the sight of God.-Luke xvi. 15.

Woe unto the scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, often pronounced.-Matt. xxiii. 13-16. 23. 25. 27. 29--33.

The foolish virgins who had no oil to put into their lamps, were shut out.-Matt. xxv, 8, &c.

They shall begin to say, We have eat and drank in thy presence, &c.

If a man thinketh himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.-Gal. vi. 3.

A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.-James i. 8.

The Jews, &c. forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.-1 Thess. ii. 16.

Behold, I will make them of the

synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie, &c. Rev. iii. 9.

CHAP. XXVII.

OF THE CONSCIENCE.

AND it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt: and he said unto his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the Lord's anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him! &c.-1 Sam. xxiv. 5, 6.

And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people; and David said unto the Lord, I have

sinned greatly in that I have done, to a feast, &c. whatsoever is set before &c.-2 Sam. xxiv. 10. xii. 13.

When Josiah had heard the words of the book of the law, he rent his clothes; and he commanded, &c. Go ye, inquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, concerning this book that is found; for great is the wrath of the Lord, &c. Tell the man that sent you to me, &c. I will bring evil upon this place, &c. But to the king of Judah, &c. Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself, &c. thine eyes shall not see all the evil, &c.-2 Kings xxii. 11-13. 15, 16. 18-20.

I will not remove mine integrity, &c. my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.-Job xxvii. 5, 6.

He that is without sin, let him first cast a stone at her, &c. They which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience. went out one by one.John viii. 7. 9.

Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter, &c. What shall we do? -Acts ii. 37.

Paul said, Men and brethren, I have lived in allgood conscience before God until this day.-Acts xxxiii. 1.

And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence, toward God and toward men. -Acts xxiv. 16.

Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts; their conscience also bearing them witness (or the conscience witnessing with them), and their thoughts the meanwhile (or between themselves) accusing or else excusing one another.-Rom.ii. 15,16.

I say the truth in Christ, I lie not; my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost.-Rom. ix. 1.

Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.-Rom. xiii. 5.

Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for con science sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: if any of them that believe not, bid you

you eat, asking no questions for conscience sake; but if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice to idols; eat not, for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake, &c. Conscience, I say; not thine own, but of the others: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience? &c. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God.— 1 Cor. x. 25–29. 32. viii. 7.

Our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, &c. -2 Cor. i. 12.

By manifestation of the truth, commended ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.2 Cor. iv. 2.

We are made manifest unto God; and I trust also, are made manifestin your consciences.--2 Cor. v. 11.

Now the end of the commandment is charity, out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned, &c. holding faith and a good conscience; which some having put away, concerning faith have made shipwreck.-1 Tim. i. 5. 19.

Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.-1 Tim. iii. 9.

The Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, &c. speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their consciences seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, &c.-1 Tim. iv. 1-3.

I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers, with a pure conscience.-2 Tim. i. 3.

Unto them that are defiled and unbelieving, is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. Titus i. 15.

In which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience, &c. If the blood of bulls and of goats sanctifieth, to the purifying of the flesh;

how much more shall the blood of Christ, &c. purge your consciences from dead works, to serve the living God?-Heb. ix. 9. 13, 14.

The law, having a shadow of good things to come, &c. can never, with those sacrifices they offered year by year continually, make the comers thereunto perfect for then would they not have ceased to be offered; because that the worshippers once purged, should have had no more conscience of sins; but in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. Let us draw near, &c. having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, &c. -Heb. x. 1-3. 22.

We trust we have a good conscience in all things, willing to live honestly. -Heb. xiii. 18.

Satan was a lying spirit, in the mouth of all his prophets, to persuade Ahab, &c.-1 Kings xxii. 21-23. 2 Chron. xx. 21, 22.

And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. -1 Chron. xxi. 1. 2 Sam. xxiv. 1.

This is thankworthy, if a man for Now there was a day, when the conscience toward God endure grief, sons of God came to present themsuffering wrongfully.-1 Pet. ii. 19. selves before the Lord; and Satan Having a good conscience; that (or the adversary) came also among whereas they speak evil of you, &c. (or in the midst of) them; and the Baptism doth also now save us; not Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest the putting away the filth of the flesh, thou? Then said he, &c. From but the answer of a good conscience going to and fro in the earth, and toward God, by the resurrection of from walking up and down in it, &c. Jesus Christ.-1 Pet. iii. 16. 21. He said, Doth Job fear God for Let us not love in word, &c. nought? Hast not thou made an Hereby we know, &c. For if our hedge about him? &c. Put forth heart condemn us, God is greater thine hand now, and touch all that than our heart, and knoweth all things. he hath, and he will curse thee to thy Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, face, &c. Then Satan, having leave then have we confidence toward God. given him, destroyed all he had.-1 John iii. 18-22. Job i. 6, &c. ii. 1-3.

CHAP. XXVIII.

OF THE DEVIL: OF HIS SUBTILTY

BY HIMSELF, AND BY HIS INSTRU-
MENTS, WICKED MEN, FALSE

DUCERS. THE DESCRIPTION OF
THEM.

Hast thou considered my servant Job? &c. still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin; yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life: but put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone, and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the Lord said, He is in thine hand: but (or only) save his life. So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job, &c.-Job ii.

SECT. I. Of Satan, the Devil himself.
Now the serpent was
more subtile
than any beast of the field which the
Lord God had made: and he said
unto the woman, Yea (or because),
hath God said, Ye shall not eat of 3-7.

And he shewed me Joshua the goeth he, and taketh with himself high priest, standing before the angel seven other spirits, more wicked than of the Lord, and Satan standing at himself; and they enter in and dwell his right hand, to resist him. And there: and the last state of that man the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord is worse than the first.-Matt. xii. rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord 43-45. that hath chosen Jerusalem, &c.Zech. iii. 1, 2.

Jesus was led up of the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted, &c. the tempter came to him: he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered, and said, It is written, &c. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge, &c. Jesus said, It is written again, &c. The devil, &c. sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me, &c. Get thee hence, Satan; for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God; and him only shalt thou serve.-Matt. iv. 1-12.

When Jesus was come on the other side, &c. there met him two possessed with devils, &c. and they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? &c. So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. And he said unto them, Go, &c. The whole city came out and besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.-Matt. viii. 28-35. Mark v. 2, &c. Luke viii. 27, &c.

When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and, &c. The tares are the children of the wicked one; the enemy that soweth them, is the devil.-Matt. xiii. 19. 38, 39.

Jesus rebuked the devil, and he departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour, &c. Howbeit, this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.-Matt. xvii. 18. 21.

Christ suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.— Mark i. 24, 25. 34.

Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning, fall from heaven.-Luke x. 17, 18.

And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub, the chief of the devils, &c. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? Because ye say, I cast out devils through Beelzebub. But if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out?—Luke xi. 14, 15. 17—21. Mark iii. 22, 23.

Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed? &c.-Luke xiii. 16.

Simon, Simon, behold, Satan bath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not.-Luke xxii. 31, 32.

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through Ye are of your father the devil; dry places, seeking rest, and findeth and the lusts of your father ye will none. Then he saith, I will return do. He was a murderer from the into my house, from whence I came beginning, and abode not in the out: and when he is come, he findeth truth, because there is no truth in it empty, swept, and garnished: then him: when he speaketh a lie, he

speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.-John viii. 44. The devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, &c. After Jesus had given the sop to Judas, Satan entered into him.-John xiii. 2. 26, 27. Luke xxii. 3.

The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.-John xiv. 30. When the Spirit is come, he will reprove (or convince) the world of sin, of righteousness, &c. of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.-John xvi. 8, 9. 11.

I pray, &c. that thou shouldest keep them from the evil one.-John xvii. 15.

Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart, to lie to the Holy Ghost?-Acts v. 3.

And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. Rom. xvi. 20.

Then come together again, lest Satan tempt you for your incontinency.-1 Cor. vii. 5.

Confirm your love toward him, &c. lest Satan should get any advantage of us for we are not ignorant of his devices.-2 Cor. ii. 8-12.

If our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel, &c.2 Cor. iv. 3, 4.

But I fear lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your mind should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ, &c. No marvel: for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.-2 Cor. xi. 3. 14. Acts xiii. 10.

There was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan, to buffet me.-2. Cor. xii. 7.

Ye walked, &c. according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.-Eph. ii. 2.

Let not the sun go down upon

your wrath, neither give place to the devil.-Eph. iv. 26, 27.

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil; for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness (or wicked spirits) in high places: wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, &c. above all, taking the shield of faith, whereby ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.-Eph. vi: 11-13.16.

We would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again, but Satan hindered us.-1 Thess. ii. 18.

I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you.-1 Thess. iii. 5.

That wicked one be revealed, &c. whose coming is after the working of Satan; with all power, and signs, and lying wonders.-2 Thess. ii. 8, 9.

Not a novice, lest, being lifted up with pride, he fall into the condemnation of the devil.-1 Tim. iii. 6.

In meekness instructing those, &c. that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive (or alive) by him at his will.-2 Tim. ii. 25, 26.

Through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.-Heb. ii. 14.

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.-James iv. 7.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist, stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren.-1 Pet. v. 8, 9.

I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one.-1 John ii. 13, 14. v. 18. 2 Thess. iii. 3.

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son
